Location of ignition coil on UK TCS

I am now ready to fit the solenoid and ignition coil on my TCS and would like to fit them in near the std position as possible. I have tried to find pics of the locations, but it really isn't clear as there is not many pics I can find that show the solenoid let alone the coil locations. So any guidance would be welcome.

It depends on where the two wires are on the wiring loom.

All the Federal cars I have seen have the coil near the offside petrol tank, just above the chassis. There is usually a resister located there which reduces the voltage to the coil to 9v. It is boosted to 12v from the starter solenoid on starting.

It is held in a metal Omega shaped bracket, and bolted through the fibreglass inner wing with 2 nuts and bolts. .

As 4129R says, the coil on the Federal TCS is on the fiberglass near the passenger side (right side) fuel tank near the firewall. Given the location of the distributor, I would think that the coil is mounted in the same place on the Brit versions.

And the solenoid is integral with the starter, surely?

I think both pre-engaged and inertial starters were used on TCs and I guess specials. For UK my guess is inertial units were used.

My '72 TC has had the pre-engaged starter from new Dave, and I can't see them going back to inertia starters for the later cars ?

The Elan on the other hand with the same engine had inertia starters with separate solenoids all the time so I'd guess that a DPO has substituted one on your engine. At one time there was a big price difference with the inertia ones being really cheap. These days, not so much and you can pick up the pre-engaged ones for around £90-£100 new.

Brian cheers, I'll get a pre-engage motor probably a powerlite one. I have an odd starter ring too 132tooth so have to make sure it's the right motor.

You should have no trouble finding a good gear reduction starter that fits.
