Squeaky Steering-Solved

I had been annoyed by a squeak coming from around the top of the steering for a little while that got worse the hotter the car got. After chasing a few ideas I found it and thought I'd post just in case anyone else might struggle in the future

It was the brass pencil contact for the horn squeaking on the brass contact ring....i just smeared a tiny bit of lubricant onto the ring and this fixed it....ridiculously easy....

Yep, happens pretty often with the Triumph columns. My Herald started making the same nasty squeak/scratch last month. I recommend a dielectric grease, or something like a DeoxIT product would be even better.

Also make sure that the horn (and other things, like headlights and turn signals) are running through a relay to delay the breakdown of those contacts.

Thanks 314159td the dielectric grease is a very good idea, hadn't thought of that.

Thankfully the previous owner had done an excellent job of making sure all the circuits were fused and protected by relays. I've done the same on my Land Rovers which helps enormously with switch protection and headlight performance.
