Rear hub bearings (sealed or not)?
« on: Sunday,October 31, 2021, 08:16:45 PM »
I’m going through the new ( bought 40 years ago ) parts that came with my project 1974 TCS.  I found 4 new rear hub bearings and seals.  My question is, do the the bearings need to be sealed on both sides?  These are all open on one side.

The stock bearings are sealed. Their numbers are found here: https://www.gglotus.org/ggpart/europacr.htm#rsusp

Just did my 74 TCS rear bearings. From a mechanical stand point I would think an open bearing could be used on the inner as there is a lip seal there, but I would see no advantage to use an open bearing, other than maybe increased the amount of bearing grease? The outer bearing is another issue as there are no provisions for separate seals. My hubs are open at the bottom (3/8" hole) so dust, dirt and water can migrate into the cavity and get to the bearings. Thought of placing a zerk fitting there, filling the hub cavity with grease and then using open bearings on the inside, but as much as the car is driven not worth the trouble and why reinvent the wheel. I used all sealed bearings and the rear inner seal. It will keep out debris in the cavity between the axle and trailing arm. Just packed it with grease for some seal lubrication. As a side note the new sealed bearings I purchased all were lacking in the amount of grease. You might want to check the amount of grease in your new bearings before you install?

The bearings you have are "shielded" on one side, not sealed.  They would be ok for the outer position but you need to use the stock seal as well in the inner position.  The shields face "out" and the two open sides face "in" towards each other.  They would need to be packed with grease as whatever is in there would have dried out long ago.

The one shield looks to be rusted.  Toss that one for sure.

Thanks for your replies and good information.  Since rebuilding the rear hubs does not seam like an easy task, I’m going to invest in some new sealed bearings ( I’ll 😴 better at night).  I hate not using these “new” parts, but I think in this case it would be wise to not use them.
