1970 S2 (with some modifications) for sale on BaT
« on: Thursday,August 03, 2023, 09:48:36 AM »
Overall, this car looks really nice. The motor was recently "overhauled" and the tranny was recently "refreshed." There are some nice touches such as a compartment to store and charge your cell phone under the elbow pad in the console. The paint looks very good and it sports a cross flow (not Gordini) head with Webers.

It has been dewarted (something I grow less agnostic about over time favoring the original warts but that's a personal preference). The dash looks freshly done but I'm not a fan. The radio, instrument binnacle, and glove box have been deleted, and there are no labels. The body has been augmented by two rather large, and to my eye unsightly, scoops on the bread van sides. It also has headlight covers and the half shafts and lower links have been chromed.

As I say, it's very nice overall. I think it should bring a nice price.

You forgot to mention that JB Collier was mentioned in the video....

I think I've seen this car at the ABFM a few years ago.  It was nicely presented, but I agree with BDA on the scoops, they just don't look right.

I hadn't watched the "Walk around" video when I first posted but I watched it as I edited it and meant to add that! I also didn't mention that the seller used solder wire connectors with shrink tube rather than crimp on connectors. A very nice touch and impresses me that he took such care.

It gets nicer the more I think about it but those scoops!!

Nice, tidy Europa. I'm not a fan of the dash mods or the scoops either, but overall seems a fine example of the breed.
The Twin Cam plays the symphony whilst my right foot conducts the orchestra. At 3800 rpm the Mad Pipe Organ joins in.

Just noticed the two-tone Red/Orange tail lamps.
S2 would be all Red unless the bases were also changed.
Number and placement of bulbs is different, recently went through this with my car.

Not quite true Richard, most of the Canadian market type 54's would have the orange/red tail lamps.  The US Federal cars required the all red lamps.  I'm guessing the car came through Checkered Flag here in Vancouver, they seemed to be able to get some interesting spec cars from Lotus back in the day (as Roscoe about his Weber headed TC).

Bid to $24K, failed to make reserve. I didn't see any link posted for this. But here it is. Dash labels could be easily fixed. But those scoops on the sides are just butt ugly.

I thought it was a very nice S2 (hideous scoops notwithstanding) but I was a bit surprised that it was bid that high. I went back and looked and found that S2s can get that high and higher. I think the scoops held it back.

Maybe, I think the real reason is the fact that it's north of the 49th.  American bidders on BaT seem to not want to do their research on bringing a car across the border.  BaT should really set up a FAQ for cars listed in Canada.  It gets even worse if the cars have an engine swap.

I was close on my bid guess, expected $25K.
No sale at $24K, suppose the seller was expecting over $30K.
Import question and scoops probably did suppress bidding.
I would add a black banner LOTUS type stripe along the sail panel to mute the scoops.
Now wondering how I might add scoops to my car that would not be ugly.
NACA ducts apparently are not all that effective.

NACA ducts are about 50% as effective as scoops, assuming similar sizes. Much better in terms of drag, though.

Tempting. That guy in San Fran does bodies with thin slit intakes in the sail panels that are quite nice. I forget his name, he seems to be a Europa specialist. Also does improved seat frames and targa tops.
