Which Weber for the Renault Engine?

Hi, which Weber works best on the Renault engine, the 40 or the 45? Also what jets are best on this ?

Is the Weber the best choice?

Just trying to gather facts before booking a rolling road session.

In  1967/68  i had a 1970 Europa  1470cc  which had an  ELSE kit fitted,  The car had a single 45 Webber on. I had it set up on the rollers and it went very well. Sorry ,I don't know what jetting was.....

When I had an Else conversion years ago it had a 45 DCOE.

Either way, there really isn't much of a choice nowadays. For the stock manifold, the Weber DG series is the preferred choice. I don't know what else is out there. For the side draft manifolds, I'm using the Weber DCOE 45 on my Else clone. Again, besides the Webers and Dellortos, there really aren't many other choices.

If your life is too simple you can complicate the matter by going to a Weber clone Fuel Injection system.
No issue with jetting, but tuning is still a hassle.

From past experience, it's easy to over-carburate the Renault.  Bigger is not necessarily better.  IIRC, Else used the 45, but it's a case of balancing the main/air correction/idles properly so your progression is smooth with little to no flat-spotting.  FWIW, I always found the Delortos to be a bit easier to get that nice consistent flow from idle to WOT than the Webers, but that may have been my driving style (which is more like James May than Jeremy); I don't think I've smoked the back tires since my teen years driving my dad's '69 Pontiac Grand Prix.

A single 40 is a bit small as the manifolds don't flow spectacularly.  From the Europa.io archives:

My Federal Type 65 S2'  PO had the carb set up for autocross by a local dyno shop.   Autocross often has a lot of tight corners, and you can spend a much time accelerating out of them.   I'm guessing here, but I think maintaining higher gas velocities at low-mid-range rpm was the reason they chose smaller chokes than I would have.   I've been pondering re-doing the carb, but so far it  hasn't gotten beyond the pondering stage.
