You need some flex or high rpm vibrations will emulsify the fuel in the float bowl leaning the mix drastically.

I am trying to diagnose my engine sputtering after 4,000 rpms. That is why this topic interests me.

Here is what was on my car and running well, until my recently rebuild. I popped open the cross-over adapter to see what was in there. Its just normal gaskets. Not sure how I could even get flex into this, if it needed it.

That is a custom made adapter/balance pipe.  Mill a circular recess in the face to the carb for an o-ring.  You will have to lightly glue it in place to hold it while you assemble everything.  You will also need thackeray washers underneath the nuts.

I may someday, but I put it back together and changed cap and wires. All good!

Glad it is running better but please fix the carb mounting.  High rpm leanness will kill your engine.
