Output shaft shim size
« on: Tuesday,June 07, 2022, 04:35:53 AM »

Would anyone know know the correct size for these shims.

I don't have any to measure but looking at the gearbox I think 35 o/d with a 25mm hole will work.

The usual suppliers stock shims but they sell them individually at high cost, I can buy 10 for the cost
of a single and would rather get a good supply of different thicknesses to use as required.

Thanks.

I have a spare transaxle lying around and the output shaft is 25.4mm-ish (it's a bit dirty) in diameter.  The outside diameter of the half shaft yoke is 36.3mm-ish (it's a casting).  So either 1" ID and 1 7/16" OD or 26mm ID and 36mm OD.

Thanks JB, I'll re-check the measurement I made on my output shaft, looks like 26 id - 35/35 o/d will work fine.

Your existing shims should be in good shape. So measure the slop and order shims to fill it, intending to use the existing ones as well?

how would you go about mesuring
cause the only option i see is to take it apart and add shims until it’s a thight fit for the roll pins is there a way to stick in a feeler gage

Hold a dial indicator on the yoke, then move it in-out and see how much it moves?

I understand that, I don't like ripping a car apart until I've got everything ready to fix it.

But on buying shims, I bought mine from an industrial supplier and they were relatively cheap, nothing like 2.50 each. If you do a search for something like "shim washer" you should find a local supplier. They are nothing special, a common engineering component. I vaguely remember I bought the minimum order of 10 (?) in 0.005" & 0.010" sizes and I wouldn't have done that at 2.50 each !

I had no shims to measure up in the first place. After measuring up the output shaft and getting some advice
here I settled on 37mm o/d & 26mm i/d shims.

I have purchased 30 shims in various thickness from this place, the cost was £14.00, including shipping, around 45p each;

There will be many similar suppliers in the US, just have a search for circular, carbon steel shim washers.

Im also needing some shims but my question is does it matter if they are steel, carbon steel, high quality steel or stainless steel., all as I have seen advertised. btw I was going for 25 x 35 size as I dont think the 1/2mm loss on the outer edge is a big deal.

25mm ID is too small.

Ideally I would have chosen 26 - 36 if they were available, but having measured where the oil seal sits the 37 should fit, if not it's very easy to take a little off the outside.

When they arrive I'll post up with the results.
