Tech in the Providence-Boston corridor
« on: Sunday,April 17, 2022, 09:06:52 AM »
Still can not get the (*%$$#@ Strombergs on my twink to do what they're supposed to do.  Needless to say...that's really torquing me a bit.

So...anyone in the SE MA/RI/BOS south shore area that anyone know of that you'd trust to work on a twink (I've run out of both ideas and skill, so not afraid to admit when I'm stumped and call in an expert) to get the engine working properly.

I THINK I've set everything up: needles, new gaskets, new floats (set for 11/16" per the manual), new o-rings, new viton o-rings on the base, thackerys set properly (I think?), carbs flushed out with carb cleaner, idle screws initially set at 1.5 turns in from where they just contact the throttle lever...etc.  Over and over.  Not frustrated...but I'm at a loss as to where to go next, so figure if there is someone who is more intimate with Stromberg fun and games (give me a Solex or Weber anyday...) than I am...I'm all ears (and will stick the thing on a trailer and bring it there...;)

Thoughts welcome!

Did you change the jets the needles run in? Mine were pretty worn when I rebuilt my Strombergs.

There’s also a guy, maybe Joe Curto? Who rebuilds carbs.

I've never even seen a Stromberg but I have set up many SU carbs on Z's. Did you use a sync tool to balance

+1 on the needle jets.  Worn needle jets have a disproportionate effect on idle and low speed.  If you tune for the low speed then the high speed is off.

I know Joe...this may be the route I take.

Thanks for the info and pointer.  Printed it all out...for reference, especially the setting up part.

Great stuff, but may be a bit beyond my home shop (especially replacing jets and pressing parts in) right now.  Thinking just sending out the carb rack and having it gone through completely (yeah, spending $) and start from a top-bottom restoration on this part.

Lots of folks have used Joe in the past and seem to be pleased.  It's worth a shot.
