Twin Cam “Moly” ring source?
« on: Wednesday,March 30, 2022, 04:58:05 AM »
I was hoping to put “Moly” rings in my .020” over Twin Cam instead of standard type rings. RD Ent. Does not have them, I do not see them listed on Burton, Lotus Supplies etc. Dave Bean has not answered my email from Monday morning (I will call them today). Does anyone know of a source? Even the “standard” type rings are 3 weeks out…

I think you mean "chrome" rings, as in chromium-molybdenum.  Can't comment on whether that is a good idea or not as it is application specific -- usually in super-hard, coated bores I thought.  However, if Burton doesn't offer them, then good old cast-iron rings should be the better choice.

I think JE pistons would be the best source if they make them.  I suggest them because they make twincam pistons.
Otherwise, you could try some of the ring manufacturers, trw, sealed power,
Mahle, Hastings, etc.

On my last rebuild, I installed Deves rings.  I think that is what RD supplies.  I bought mine directly from Deves.  They never seated and were very poor quality.  Some rings had way too much gap and some would not even go in due to gap butting.  Before jumping to conclusions, the bores were straight and to size (.020" over)

Anyway, after 1500 miles of smoking, I pulled the engine, ball honed and installed QED piston rings.  No problems or oil consumption.

Btw, I have AE powermax pistons which have a different ring pack than the stock pistons.  The Dave Bean catalog has a good description of the ring packs.

Good luck in your hunt.

Dave Bean does not have anything for my motor but Deves, RD Ent has those too. My pistons have 1/16”, 5/64”, 3/16” thickness of rings which I guess is not the most modern of thickness…

You can order rings by dimension from some suppliers.

You don't have original oem pistons because your ring dimensions are the same as mine.  In my experience, QED is the best most knowledgable supplier of twincam parts.  I would talk to them.   I don't know what you are looking for as far as hp, but I know some race twincams are over 200 bhp.
Btw plasma rings are good for anti-scuffing since they retain oil, but are not good for detonation because the coating can flake off.  Your turbo engine may have some detonation issues to deal with.

My pistons are Covmo Powermax from England.
I have reached out to QED with a couple of questions...

Try Total Seal. They have quite a selection of sizes, file fit, etc...

QED responded, their rings are nitrided steel and made in Japan. This is supposed to be excellent at handling detonation etc….

With shipping the QED rings are less expensive (and better) than Deves rings from here without shipping....
