Centre console screws nest to window switches
« on: Saturday,February 05, 2022, 05:48:57 PM »
Little question on may interior photos there are black philips head screws next to the window switches. One each side on the centreline of the switches. My 65 S2 had these screws. When I put the car back together after it's rebuild I have the screws but there is nothing behind the centre console on my car to screw into.  Not all Europas seem to have them.

Can anyone advise what these screws fixed into.

Hi there,
My TC doesn't have visible screws by the window switches, they just seem to push in. A photo of what you've got might help, I can't think where a screw would go with my window switches. By any chance has someone used the dashboard style rocker switches like the later Elans ?

The tc has snap in switches and the s2 has screw in switches.  I have a tc, so I don't know exactly, but looking at the parts book photo, I would assume the switches install from the back and the screws go through the center console and engage the holes in  switch "ears".

Just dug this out of its ‘safe place’ to check as you had me wondering…..
Ignoring the badge that has been stuck on everything else was as original on my 71 type 65 S2 (parents bought it new), clips on the back side of the screws are probably what you require.

Do you have this bracket under the console?  S2 switches are secured using nuts. So pfreenwould be correct.

I'm with the OP, I'm still not understanding what those screws connect to. I have them in my car too but didn't take the console apart yet to look behind it.

Do you have the ashtray bracket in?  Also I have the backside of my original dash that shows those holes if you look hard . The front side was recovered so that wouldn’t help you.

Thanks for the replies. The fist photo shows the screws exactly The screws secured on the back with a speed nut and the last photo with the witness marks make me think it is some sort of stand off  to prevent the flimsy panel being being pressed against the ply dash. I have all the other brackets/Ash tray etc. Thanks again for the replies.

Dakazman has shown the 2 vital parts required to fix the centre console, switches and ashtray.
The bracket on the bottom of the dash holds the switch bracket which has the switches fastened to it from behind before the console is slid into place and held by the 2 screws that hold the ashtray. The switches fit through the metal surrounds.
Any thing else is a bodge !
There should not be any visible screws

Some photos taken from various period reviews of the S2, you can clearly see the screws either side of the window switches - must have been a factory bodge?!

Early S2 press car.
It had lots of things that never went through to production models.
Cigar lighter (19) in console. Flick switch (7) left of speedo. etc
I bought one of the first S2 cars sold in the UK and there were none of those.

The pictures where from various articles using various cars across a range of years in both right and left hand drive whilst the S2 was in production.
You can see many differences across the pictures and in typical Lotus fashion it’s hard to say what was standard (maybe it was standard for that particular week of production?!).
The same screws appear in the same locations many times over, along with the OP’s car (hence the question) so it must be quite a coincidence for the same bodge to be used so many times over. - They came from the factory on my own car.

Different countries had different requirements and Lotus provided different specs to suit.
