Restore Cosmic wheels bright finish?
« on: Tuesday,February 01, 2022, 08:30:49 PM »
Without sending my Cosmic wheels to England for re-cutting what is the best method to restore the bright edges?

I know they were originally cut, not polished.

I had a local wheel refinished do mine.  Turned out well.  If you have access to a big enough lathe, you could spin and cut/polish them yourself.

I came across a nice explanation from one TVR owner on BAT who set up a wheel lathe in his own garage, using the bare car frame and hub then driving the bare wheel with an electric motor and belt.   It looked very doable.  His picture of the lathe is below

The listing is here

and the bit in the video where he explains what he did is here

I may experiment with some cheap US made wheel first.
One concern is to not radius the edges.

I have been working on a set of Cosmic wheels for a few weeks.  I have been sanding and polishing the "bright edges" by hand.  I started sanding with 100 grit right on up to 1000 grit.  Finally some metal polish and four ought brass wool and then metal polish with a cotton cloth.  It's a bit tedious but also rewarding.

My father did ours by painting the wheels gold then using a DA sander to nip every rib.  It isn't polished persay but it is shiny.  He clear coated them after.

If you have a bench grinder with a polishing pad, along with some green rouge you can buff that up to a nice mirror shine. you could also use a pneumatic die grinder with a polishing pad and the rouge.

Unless something goes sour at the last minute I have made a deal on a set of 15x5.5 Cosmic to fit my TR4.
Of course they also need restoration.
