wheel studs 3/8-24 knurld 13.1mm and about 50-55mm long
« on: Friday,November 05, 2021, 02:42:26 PM »
Hi
I just got a new set of wheels for my Europa-68.
The problem is that the new set of Europa wheel studs that I also bought is to short.

Anyone that know where to order longer wheel studs 3/8-24 knurld 13.1mm and preferably about 50-55mm long (in total)

/Adrian

Demon Tweeks U.K. has 50 and 60 mm long 3/8"

You might also consider going to 7/16" studs and lugnuts while you're at it.

Sorry but those studs don't have the correct knurl. This is as close as I can find:
https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-21H5774XL  in 48mm length.
As I said 7/16" studs are stronger and easier to get longer ones so might be a solution.

I fitted 12mm studs when I moved to 15" wheels, but still ran 13" wheels with the larger studs for some time. I know the lighter studs work fine with standard Lotus steel wheels and alloys, but there's got to be a reason that most modern cars have moved to using larger studs.

At the time I never even considered the pattern of the hub end, it's going into a plain hole so as long as the diameter is is a press fit, it's going to work ?

Thanks, yes I have kind of realised that changing studs and nuts to a thicker dimension is what most have done. Maybe I need to walk down that path as well. But as I just bought a compleet set of wheel :-\

Speaking of wheel stud replacement, thought I would post what I found when replacing the stock studs to 12mm. Didn't notice it until I really inspected.

Mine look necked down like that, too. Something to replace before the car gets on the road.

How tight were they torqued?!! They only need 40 - 45 ft.-lbs.

Wow, someone's been really heaving on that wheel nut, I can't imagine that's happened due to cornering loads alone. Maybe tyre fitters with impact guns is the reason most modern cars have stronger studs !

Pleasures of having a tire place use air powered impact wrenches to tighten wheel nuts. "Works for a big-ol Chevy, outta work for this little car."
