On 46/0478 the VIN plate is riveted on the back section drivers side (LHD) near the vent opening for the pressurized plenum, see picture.

I have found a hidden number inside the fiberglass on driver side about 1 foot above the striker plate, the only way to ever see this number is to cut open the glass,  very very well hidden,
I would guess only a handfull of people have ever seen this number, I had to change the fiberglass around striker and fender due to an accident, this is how I found that number, guess I should have taken a pic.  too late now.   Mike.    1969  s2.

For all S1 owners, besides the one in the front boot, are there any other tags or plates with the VIN or manufacturers info on the S1?

Hi Grumblebuns,

the chassis number was also stamped on the top face of the right rear chassis leg
The body has a 4 digit number which can be found in the area below the rear window, in the gutter below the left hand hinge (will almost certainly not match the chassis number).
The Renault engine and gearbox have their own identification / serial numbers on tags.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. It appears that the plate in the front compartment is the only "official" VIN for the S1s.

Mine is stamped on a plate that is riveted to the chassis leg.  The chassis was so bad, I'm sure it was original.

As others have said the ID plate is riveted to the 'bulkhead' under the front bonnet, see picture.

On my car a different model from the Lotus plate. And also a plate from the importer for France. Several S1 with these plates. On the frame the engraving at the usual location

Hi Hachille,

It seems that the earlier cars had narrow VIN plates?
(lovely car by the way!)

0009?  That's not an early car, that's practically a prototype!  Very cool.

Yup, the last S1s used a plate similar to the S2s.

Yes that's cool  :), it's one of the first. Curiously, at 5km there is the n ° 10 and at 80km the n ° 13. It is likely that these 3 cars were together on the production lines at LOTUS. Normally they will meet to ride in the center of France in September.
For the plates, I don't know if there are any narrower ones.
