Eruopa s2 basket case, 4 questions
« on: Friday,February 12, 2021, 06:43:05 AM »
The car was in pieces when I got it, so things I do not know,   1st.   heater hoses from valve is 5/8,  but tubes are 1/2,  what gives?  do I make a reducer, same on return to engine  from 1/2 to 5/8..   2nd question.  the clutch cable does it run under engine then to a hole beside driver seat?  no hole now had to rebuild this area, 3rd.
the gas cable does it run ON TOP of steel frame tunnel then out the shifter whole.  next;  I ordered the letters for dash, I have made new dash, am ready to stain,
after that do I put letters on then clear coat (automotive uv resistant) or vanish,  or do I put the finish coat on then just stick the letters on.  Yea , lots of stupid question.  Thanks  Mike.

I'm not sure if you have an S1/2 or TC. I'm answering for the TC, but I'm guessing the answers are pretty much the same either way.

#2 - the clutch cable runs along the side of the corner formed by the floor and the vertical part that goes around the backbone and out the corner beside the driver's seat. IIRC, there is supposed to be a seal in a sheet metal piece that gets pop riveted to the corner on the outside. A big glob of silicone would work as well. The cable stays pretty straight to a fitting that is welded to the frame.

#3 - IIRC, the accelerator cable runs along backbone and out from the top of the backbone. On a Federal car, I THINK it exits the interior on the passenger side. I'm sure it doesn't go into the backbone.

#4 - I can't help you with the letters but (everybody get ready...) you want to make sure you finish the front, back, and all edges so that moisture cannot get into the wood.

Good luck and show us your progress when you can.

S1/2 or TC/S?

Can you post a photo of the heater valve?  Shouldn't require 5/8' hose.

Hi Mike,

I put two coats of finish on my dash before applying the letters. Once the letters were applied I added three additional coats with a light sanding before the final coat. It turned out great.

Yes, seal all of the edges including the back.

Where are you in Canada?

Just checked my heater shutoff 5/8", water pump 5/8", heater tubes into frame, 1/2". I had a bunch of spare fittings which had a reducer on them stepping them up.

As for the coatings , I put clear polyurethane on my original dash all good but I really like my second dash with automotive clearcoat sprayed only after two coats did I put the decals on. then followed up with another two or more coats.

YES I sealed the sides also, BDA drums this in all the time, but cautiously so. moisture inside the wood will crack the finish, unlike household furniture which must breathe.
I'll look thru my huge selection of other's vehicles on the routings

Ok thanks for replies,  I''ll  make a stepdown/up for heater hoses,  and use clearcoat   (4 times),  still a little confused with answer about clutch cable, from engine(I assume
it goes below transmission then loops around then up to body driver side and then beside steel tunnel 1/2 way then through fiberglass to pedal??  my issue is
rite at the engine, wher does it go.  Thansks again.

The Canadian '69 S2 did not have letters on the dash. The switches were not labelled.

on my '69 s2, the engine end of the clutch cable goes thru a hole in the motor mount.
inside there is a bracket close to the pedals, but i don't think mine is stock.
the replacement cable i have seems a bit too long, but functions.
couldn't see any other way to route it.

note- my s2 was also a basket case. and still is, i guess.
