Question re: High balance tube manifold
« on: Tuesday,January 19, 2021, 12:37:38 PM »
I am finally getting around to installing the high balance tube manifold that was made for the Yahoo Group long ago. I think it came with a bracket for the throttle cable end, but I cannot find that. Does anyone have one (unlikely) or can you send a picture with dimensions?
Thanks very much, John

Have you looked at the files that EuropaTC collected before the yahoo group was shut down? You may find something useful there: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uOmTsXhIF3qlutvCvmY8sAaliwc8Rwbj

BDA, thanks for the reminder of the new name and host for the Yahoo Group. I checked the link you sent and did not find what I needed. But now that I have been reminded to go to the new address, I will search the entire site.

I had a major computer glitch, mug of tea on the keyboard, lost "bookmarks".

I bought the same Peter Baxter manifold also about to be finally installed on my TCS this year. I hope these pictures gives you an idea of the throttle bracket dimensions. If you need the exact dimensions let me know, I'll have to dig it out of its hiding place.

It isn't as nice as Joji's piece but I took a plain aluminum right angle bracket and drilled holes to attach it to the manifold and a hole in the middle for the throttle cable. I didn't want to drill holes in my valve cover.  My manifold is from an S4 Elan.

Gumblebuns: Thanks, that's what I remember. I will keep looking, but the following post showed it easily replaced.

literarymadness: good, simple solution, thanks

Literarymadness: Do you have the width and thickness of the angle aluminum that you used?
Thanks, John

@jpane: My TCS is in the shop; I am having my rear brakes converted to disc brakes and my front brakes swapped out for vented discs. Should have it home by Tuesday and will measure those dimensions for you.

on our dyno tests the larger the balance pipe (without going overboard) the more power & a smoother engine will be made on SUs & Strombergs, this is in line with David Vizards findings, it also pays to flow / blend the balance pipe entry from the manifold.

Do you know if there have been any dyno runs to determine if air trumpets on Strombergs or SUs make any difference in power. I don't think, just eyeballing the stock airbox, that there is enough room to fit trumpets inside the airbox. Also, I'm assuming trumpet length makes a difference on power.

On balance tubes, any idea if the location of the balance tube make any difference? One of my TCs have a balance tube moved to the cast portion of the head where the inlets are siamesed to the intake flange.

The stock air box can accommodate intake "trumpets".

Yes, it does make a difference.

K&N developed a replacement air filter for the MGB and lost 2 to 3 hp when it was fitted!  The stock MGB air filters have small "trumpets" as part of the air filter base plate.  K&N had to make up their own version, which they sell separately, to get the power back up to stock.

I think RD has trumpets for the Strombergs. They are quite short. It looks like he also sell an air filter that fits the two trumpets inside. I was just looking at that arrangement.

@Turbo: R.D. sells them for $66 a pair and then you have the ones below.

@JBCollier:  I'm curious on how you get the Trumpets inside the factory airbox and secure them (unless you meant the aftermarket replacement type). The bolts go from the outside of the airbox through to the other side onto the carburetor. How would you bolt the trumpets inside the airbox to the carburetor? I already have some trumpets but couldn't figure out a way around the mounting them inside the factory airbox issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
