"Packing" under battery?

There is very little draw through the alternator diodes but very minimal.  I too can leave it for some months with the battery connected and have no issues.

However, it is a good idea to have a battery disconnect operable from the driver’s seat for safety reasons.  I have one, along with a fire system.  A lot of Europas die by fire.
