Is the Renault 843 a good option for my S2
« on: Tuesday,June 30, 2020, 01:18:11 PM »
Hi
I have a S2 (1968) that is working just fine with a 4geared(336?)
However, someone is now selling a Renault R16TX 843 engine, and I’m somewhat interested in buying it and restore it as a spare /exchange engine. (The engine don’t turn at the moment)
It seems as the engine have >90hp original. Right
Would that be a good option?
What do I need to change?
What would you recommend me to change to fit it in my car?
Is this the Gordini engine? Is there available tuning parts to decent prise?

All you thoughts is appreciated to help me decide.

Best Regards, Adrian

  Welcome Addi,
I would say yes , however you need to pay attention to the motor mounts.

http://www.syer.net/comparativepics.htm

The cam would need to be changed out ,Renault 16 shop, https://www.franzose.de and mecaparts has this item. The timing case cover also needs to be changed out . Exhaust headers needed and available.
 Complete details here:

http://lotus-europa.com/manuals/s1misc/PFEngineering.pdf

Picking up that engine can make you some money crankshaft 500, head 750, distributor 220.etc.

Alpine America does several mods and can give you technical advice. A member called runningwild had his engine built by Michel.

I’m also going thru this mod and hope to add A/C driven from the crankshaft.
Still a work in progress .

Hi Adde,

The 843 block will bolt into your S2 just fine with some mods to accomodate the exhaust.
You'll need to consider the state of the engine if it doesn't turn and that should be reflected in the purchase price.

Do you have further details on the condition?
Parts are available from many sources reasonably close to you in Sweden
Below is a thread that should answer many of your questions.

You can spend a little, or a lot.  It all depends on what power output you are looking for.  Up to 100 hp, I would stick with the wedge engine you have.  Header, sidedraft, bit of porting work and you're there.  A lot easier and cheaper than fitting a similar output crossflow.  You can get even higher outputs from wedge engines but then reliability and street drivability suffer.

The nice thing about a crossflow is that you can build a 120 to 140 hp engine that is as sweet as a nut to drive.  Tractable and economical (at part throttle) and plenty of top end -- forget about catching 300hp soccer moms though.  The catch?  $$$  It isn't cheap buying pistons, rods, valves and tons of machine work.  The higher the performance of the engine you start with, the better.  Already has 10.25:1 pistons?  Great.  9.0:1?  Add pistons and liners.  Large ports and valves?  Excellent.  Just need a bit port matching and smoothing.  Small valve and port head?  Lots of $$ in parts and machining.  It can all get expensive in a hurry.

A good conversion, plenty of tuning potential with easy, cheapish hp increases, far cheaper than TC.
As it from an R16 it should have the long cam that drives the water pump, this is the engine I used to start with.
It should fit straight in as its R16 without many changes but as stated cast iron exhaust manifold needs changing as that will be wrong - see photo.
We moved the battery fairly quickly as I didn't want fuel mixing with electricity
No its not a Gordini engine but as close as you can get.

Adde, Thank you for starting this thread . It has already consolidated the crossflow information out there.
Lotus 47 , thanks for the heads up on the oval measurement statements as I was just going to put in an order.

Gavin, that was the thread I was searching for... two thumbs up!
