Steering Wheel Removal
« on: Sunday,June 07, 2020, 04:40:56 PM »
Hi Guys,
I'm trying to remove the steering wheel on my 73 TCS.  Everything mounted behind the steering wheel is loose and needs to be remounted, adjusted, tightened or whatever.  I have not been able to get to any of this because I can't remove the plastic center badge.  I've tried to gently pry it off but after it deforms from my pressure I stop for fear of breaking it.  I think it's original to the car and I would like to keep it.  A replacement is almost as pricey as an ashtray.
I think it's a one piece unit as opposed to a separate center circle and outer ring, but I could be wrong.  The parts and shop manuals show it as one piece.
I appreciate any advice you may have.

Get a thin bladed knife or X-acto knife and pry out the center cover. The center cover is everything inside the "seam"' on the face of the hub. That wasn't said very well, but if you drag your X-acto knife blade lightly from the edge of the hub inward, it will catch on the cover and you can easily pry it up. If your PO glued it (never underestimate the ability of the PO to screw things up), you're in trouble!

The center removes, not the whole bezel.  The photos show you.  It comes out rather easily.  Once you see it. you will go "oh crap"  At least I did.  My scratch on the bezel shown in the photo is from me trying to do what you were doing.
