That's a strange one all right, someone really had their imagination going to install a rotary engine !  It looks a lot of work though, lots of bits missing to start with and personally when I see anything that rough I wonder at how well mechanics have been looked after.

I am always curious on how folks attach an engine that wasn't designed for the trans.  I am aware of the adopter plate but I am clueless as to any other issues.

It's something that puzzles me as well. I can understand it if the original is either no longer serviceable or such a bad design that it falls apart every weekend, but otherwise it's a strange one. More power or a pet project for a track car sound like obvious reasons but then you need to check the transmission will take extra torque/power and in the case of some high revving engines I'd wonder if the original gearing is still suited.  Even so you'll probably need different springs/dampers/brakes/wheels to balance the car if only for the increased power.   

If the target engine is heavier then I'd guess that also means suspension/brake balance to consider as well.  Some swops look reasonable, like the zetec engines, but the Mazda engine in that one has me really puzzled as to "why ???".
