Renault oil filter update
« on: Monday,November 25, 2019, 02:43:15 PM »
I went to my local parts house earlier this month to buy some oil and a filter (renault engine). I was told that the Fram PH3512 (or equivalent) that I've been using for years was out of stock and had been discontinued. The parts guy's search for an equivalent on-line came up with a blank from his suppliers so I left do do my own research. It turns out that Fram has replaced the PH3512 with the PH8172. I can't tell the difference externally but the new number is available on-line.

Apologies if this has been covered already.

I'll thank you in the name of Renault powered Europa owners.

I have always been a fan of Fram filters, but I've become convinced that at least in the not to distant past, there were oil filters that were better than Fram (Wix comes to mind). I don't know if that's still the case but you might broaden your search to other brands in the future.

Slight differences in gasket design but otherwise the same.

I have also heard that WIX filters have a good reputation.

I’ve seen people using motorcraft fl401 in pictures, any comments  . Thanks for the additional filter.
According to the Fram chart motorcraft fl313 is a substitute.

Yup, it's just a short Ford filter.  Just make sure it has an anti-drain-back valve so you get oil pressure right away.  I used a Ford motorsports right-angle adapter so I could run a larger filter.  I use the WIX (51515) version of the standard Ford filter.

-- You can also get really, really long ones.  I used one that was about twice the usual length on my MGB.  It held an extra litre of oil!

wix 51335 fits the '69 renault.
i always thought of wix as one of those "quality" manufacturers.

The Autozone S3512 and Purolator 10101 work for Renaults, too.
On TCs I have STP3512 and WIX 1335 on my list

Picked up an STP S8AXL filter that is a direct replacement for the wix 151515 , in can be used with both conventional and synthetic oils 10,000 miles . Not that I would keep it that long.
****   DO NOT USE  - STP S8AXL . After installing my 821 in frame no long filter can be installed.
It simply will not fit due to the frame is in the way.

These engines are not designed for long oil change intervals.  No more than 5000 km or 3000 miles and a minimum of once a year.

While back in the parts stores I went to pick up a wix 51515 , it was in stock however I saw immediately that it will not fit a 1565 Renault s2 frame  to long . The alternative , Shortie filter
wix 51372 , which is also to long.  I also asked about the other oil filter numbers listed but I hey we’re all special order.  One filter did match the gasket and thread size and I will pick that filter tomorrow .
Wix WL7443, this was all from oreilly’s . See pics.
Autozone came thru with a break on the puralator 10101 from music city, however no stock . They had there own number carquest 85335 , it is a shortie and fit perfectly.
No stock found on Wix 51335.

Rascott and JB , Thanks .  I didn’t want to post some more bad numbers, the new oreillys shop has wix filters and it’s the closest. As I stated above I went back the next day and picked up what there computer showed to have the same gasket size and thread diameter of The 51515. Well no it didn’t, going back to return another filter.
The thread diameter was larger.  I’ll see what they have for an R5 and see what they say again about the 51335.
