Question about Series 2 Rear bulkhead top seat belt mounts
« on: Friday,November 30, 2018, 07:20:16 AM »
Another question. The series 1 cars had tie bars running from the chassis upwards and forwards to the top mount for the seat belt - part number 046 B 1177 and 1178. The TC and Special had a relatively complex pair of struts (A074 U 0012 and A074 U 1103) which bolted to the wheel arch which were complemented by a pair of long brackets (2 x A074 U 0016) bolted to the chassis.
The Series 2 does not appear to have either - so were the Series 2 top mounts just bonded in bobbins in the fibreboard bulkhead or was there any other sort of reinforcement?
Thanks in anticipation
Matt

My car (early S2) has threaded bobbins bonded into the body shell, separate from the fibreboard bulkhead.  You can just see the LH one in this pic:

Based on the parts book, there would have been an eye bolt threaded into it complete with the seat belt.

Looking at the parts books for the S1 and TC, the bobbin appears to be a plain bobbin, so the bolt passes through it and threads into the tie bars.

Hi Roddy - I suspected that was the case. I see you've had some mice chomping away at the bulkhead!
Thanks for the swift reply

It wasn't mice, it was a semi-hairless ape with anger issues  :FUNNY:

The fiberboard was beyond saving in parts, so the whole lot was removed and replaced with marine grade plywood.  Both sides were covered in fiberglass cloth then glassed into the body.

My parts S2, 0926R has the shoulder seat belt mount that looks to be similar to the TCs. One brace attaches to the chassis and the second to the top of the fiberglass of the inner wheel well housing.

Thanks Guys - so it looks like some S2s did have brace bars, some didn't. Doh.

My S2 54/1173 has a plate with a nut welded to it pop riveted to the back of the bulkhead.

I don't think Mr G. Buns' brace to the upper mount is factory (photo with the trouble-light featured).
