Attaching the brake lines. "Connections"

I'm trying to attract the brake lines on my 68 S2.  I have the Banks rear disc brake kit with the flex lines. What kind of hard line connecting ends go to those ends.  Same thing in front. What kinds of ends go from the tee to the flex lines.  #3 AN???

If I understand your question...


The rear brakes should have a hose to the caliper so when you change the pads, you don't have to take the caliper off the line. AN -3 is the usual size for brakes though AN -4 works just as well.


There are probably a few ways you can go depending on the configuration of the port in your caliper. Obviously, you have to determine the thread to screw into. Sometimes the caliper has an internal "inverse" flare (sort of a "nipple") in the port. Earl's Supply (and probably others) have fittings that screw into the threads and mate with that nipple. If the port doesn't have an internal nipple, the threads will be straight (as opposed to tapered pipe threads) and you can get a fitting (again, from Earl's) to work with those threads without the aforementioned internal flair and you can use the proper size stat-o-seal (a washer with an attached O-ring on the interior). They work very well. Long term - longer than  your brake flushing schedule - they will probably have to be replaced. Another option would be a banjo bolt and fitting with two copper washers.

The fronts are 3/8" 24 female brake line nuts, the rears should be the same thread unless Banks is supplying a metric end on the hose.  I would think the easiest thing to do, in regards to the rear hoses, is to take them with you to a local parts store and see what threads onto them or try a 3/8" UNF nut on them.

I dont see any reason to opt for -3AN nuts unless they're dirt cheap.  The generic 3/8-24 ones should work just fine.

Thanks guys. Called Ray at RD ent and he said they use 3/8 x24  3/16 pipe nut bundy.  I guess those screw into to 3 way and 4 way tees then the auto parts store lines hook to them.  I'll ask Richard at Banks in the morning but I'm sure the rant metric.  That's for the info  appreciate it as usual.  Tom

All the ones I have fitted have been UNF threads.

But if you are making up new brake lines, check the ends actually fit into the other bit before you flare the ends of the tubes. I have had to remake a few when the correct thread male fitting just didn't go into the female fitting.  I ended up re-using the old ends on new pipes.

Hmm.... does the rear caliper have a UNF fitting as well, or is it metric ?  I'm curious because I'd assumed given the age of the rear caliper applications it would be metric and Richard supplied a conversion hose with UNF on one end, metric on the other. 

Or has a caliper been sourced with UNF fittings ?  It is possible to screw metric into imperial but it's a very loose fit and to me looks like it'd strip threads easily.

Talked to Richard at Banks. The rear flex brake line is standard. Banjo at the caliper - standard at the other.

Ok so I finally got everything figured out. With all the brake line connections going to the RD ent 3 and 4 way and brake calipers - I make bubble flairs and use their pipe nut male 3/8-3/16.  The connections going to the Banks stuff is either banjo or double flairs.   
I think I'm getting a "flair" for this!

The male connector normally has the double flare, and the female connector normally has the single flare.

I bought a decent flaring tool which with copper pipes makes the whole job very easy, provided you check the connectors actually fit before you put them on the pipe, and provided you put them on the pipe the right way around !
