Another FNG intro

Hello, everyone!


I've been reading here for several months and decided it's time to come out of the darkness.

Your Europa enthusiasm has been infectious and has re-kindled my interest.


I am the original owner of 743496R, which I purchased new in April, 1974, from Tom's Pit Stop which was located in Scotch Plains, NJ.

The distributor was Lotus East - Dutchess Auto, in Millerton, NY. 

My Twin Cam Europa Special has Chassis #73053496R, so I guess that's a build date of May, 1973 ?



While looking for other info, I came across my log book, which made me chuckle. 

The car was picked-up 4-17-74 with 80 (transport) miles on the odometer.

The first fill-up was 12.4 gals of premium gas for $6.80. ($0.55/gal)

One year's Liability, Collision, & Comprehensive insurance was $241.50.

By the end of the first month, I had 4100 miles clocked, and by the second month, I had driven 6811 miles.

This is amusing to me because I lived 1.5 miles from where I worked a 60 hour work week, so the miles were accumulated while joy-riding in the evenings or Sundays.

Gas mileage for the first 9,311 miles (3 months) averaged 29.22 mpg, which is interesting since I always drove it hard.



The Europa was taken off the road in January, 1975, (15,516 miles) to begin installation of a turbocharger and single Weber 45DCOE.

It was a tough learning curve, as the few people who knew wouldn't talk, and the many people who talked, didn't know!

There were  mis-steps along the way, but they all contributed to my trial & error education.

For example, the stock cast-iron exaust manifold didn't like the exhaust temperatures involved.  ...A fabricated steel manifold glowed bright orange after a hard run, indicating 1800*F.

Two intake designs, another exhaust design, back to a single Stromberg, an intricate vacuum-operated turbo by-pass, boost-retard ignition, optical ignition conversion, sunroof, etc, were all done along the way.

Building boost on a freeway on-ramp, or coming out of a curve, made the trials and tribulations justifiable!


The Europa was parked a few years later, and has been awaiting revival.  ...Sadly it lost its indoor storage, so it suffered some weathering.

Life got in the way and has kept me from bringing my old friend back to life. ...I'm not sure if I should sell it, or keep my wish to revive it, alive.  ....I'm certainly not a purist, so accurate restoration is not considered.


While looking through my papers, I found some brochures & articles to scan, if anyone is interested.


I'm also curious how many forum members are original owners of their Europas ?  (New thread?)

Hi Bruce, welcome to the forum. I would love to see pictures of your turbo installation.

I believe there are one or two original owners here and more than a few old farts.

I also would be interested is photos of your car & turbo setup.
My vote is for you to keep your wish and revive your Europa.
I came to Europa's late, only owning mine for a few years.
Now it is apart, and a retirement project - which is turning out to be more enjoyable than I thought.

Not the original owner, but I've owned my Europa for 40 years so I guess it qualifies as an old friend (and I definitely qualify as an old fart). I've never actually "parked" it but I seldom put more than a few hundred miles per year on the odometer, and it seems to be less every year. I've wrestled with the idea of selling it for a few years now, but it ain't easy to part with. So were I in your shoes, I'd probably go for revival.

I'm an original owner. I bought my car from the distributor in New Orleans in 1975. The VIN is 73063635R and was built in June '73 so your assumption about your VIN is correct.

I put about 10,000 miles on it with a college buddy on a road trip. After I got home, I was involved in an accident. A fellow engineering student was restoring an S2 and was a partner in a fiberglass shop so I gave it to him to fix. More than a couple of years later, I got it back and realized that the humidity had attacked a lot of it and the frame was bent in the accident (my buddy didn't notice that) so I did a full ground up restoration. In partial payment for work he hadn't done, he gave me a BDA head. I sent that to Dave Bean for him to build me a motor. Along the way, I learned about Richard at Banks and bought a bunch of stuff from him (twin link rear suspension, rear disc brakes, vented front discs, adjustable upper A-arms, NG3 transaxle, etc.). I finally got it on the road (after twenty four years) in 1999. It's been on and off a lot since then but over the last three years or so, mostly on. Hi Bruce, and  :Welcome:

As an original owner, you're a rare species (  :)  ) so it's good to have you on board !  I suspect quite a few of us are, well, let's just put it as "senior" eh ? I'm not an original owner because when the cars were current there was no way I could have bought one, not to mention I didn't get a car licence until my mid 20's, at which point Lotus were moving in higher circles.

Here's a vote for any period articles and old photos, like most on here I find them fascinating. Old photos, girls in mini skirts, guys in flared trousers, Hendrix hair - bring 'em on !

ps - interesting notes you made back in the day. I'm the second owner of my car and the first was an engineering type guy who wrote everything down in notebooks, even to the mileages and "petrol issues". 29 mpg seems about right......  my guy was doing just over 30, but using a lot of oil !

Hi Bruce,
I am pretty sure we met when I was living in Chatham NJ. I was considering doing a turbo conversion at the time after I did the Bosch CIS injection conversion. I have a black and gold Special purchased new in '74. I am now in Massachusetts and my car is still on the road but now has Megasquirt (the CIS stuff finally wore out) and any changes are about reliability...I have a Locost 7 for experimenting with crazy. Definitely bring that puppy back to life and find a place to let it live inside.

I never took many pics of the car or turbo install, and the few that I did take are around here somewhere.

Part of aging (and time) is forgetting where things are.  ...I'll post them when I find them.

Sadly, not yet, but I'm hoping to rectify that soon.

The Europa lost its garage space to a T-bucket, a Cobra replica, and "stuff".

Hi Bruce, I'm new to the Europa community having recently bought a 72 Twin Cam that had been stored in a garage for many years. Will be doing a frame off rebuild over the winter and posting my trials and tribulations on this site.

Bring your car back inside and relive the memories of what you intended to do. The group on this forum is very helpful and unlike the "old days" you are no longer alone to figure things out (I am also from the era, if it wasn't in the repair manual you had in your hand you where on your own).
