New front suspension problem
« on: Friday,October 30, 2015, 04:49:06 PM »
I reassembled the new front suspension.  I added poly bushings to the A arms.  New tie rods and ball joints.  New bearings and the shocks were supposedly rebuilt by the factory.  When I tried to bolt everything back together the Koni shock spring is hitting the top rear A arm. It seems to be digging into the A arm.  The car is on a small lift.  I tried jacking up the suspension with a jack but it lifts the whole car. There is no movement of the suspension at all. Seems frozen. Everything moved freely before I bolted it together. I wish I could post pictures but can't get them small enough. If any one wants to email me I'll send them the pictures.  Thanks. I pulled the shock out and everything moves fine. Must be the Koni shock and spring. Even the shock body hit the rear A arm along with the spring. Spring measured 2 3/4 diameter.  Only the shock set up was from the PO.  Everything else is new. Just wanted to use these to get the car off the lift and move around. Next step.  New coilovers.    Tom

Tom,

Took some pictures of 2501R my black S2. It's build date was 10/69 and has the type S1 suspension like yours. As you can see, the drivers side suspension is at full droop and the clearance between the top spring perch and rear A arm is very tight. I measure my spring diameter around 2.5". Apparently that quarter inch makes a world of difference.

The last picture was suppose to show the difference between my early S2 shock and a TCS shock. The TCS shock is 3.5" in diameter.
