tyre choice

So my car arrived with brand new unused tyres which have sat for 35 years.  The original tyres are 175 70 13.  Am I right in believing I can go up a size and down a profile? i.e 185 60 13.  Does anyone have any recommendations

I have just put 185/60 13's on mine. there is a decent choice of tyre for this size. You loose 12mm and  18mm of ride height against the stock upgrade of 175/70 13 on the front and 185/70 13s on the rear. This seems to be the tyre choice for the performance upgrade with std 13s. if you are running on the road and are looking at new rims. look at 185/60 14s this gives a loss of 6mm in ride height and still should clear the front wheel arches (but needs checking i expect) and look good too. Getting hold of performance tyres in 175/70 13 & 185/70 13 is pretty well impossible.

I think you have an S2.  In which case the tire sizes remain the same all round unless you are changing your engine over to a heavier unit.

I have an early S2. So if I go with either the Toyota or miata motor should I go with one size larger rear tire ?

Since you're increasing your HP, you should have wider tires - to 185/70 - 13 in the rear or maybe a little wider. I went to 15" wheels thinking that they would be easier to find (they also increase the effective spring rate a little), but it still seems that people are finding 13" tires. Keep in mind that you'll probably have to adjust your speedometer after doing this.

On my Toyota powered S2 project, I'm initially planning on running 185s all around. I do not know how the 4AGE compares to the Renault motor, weight wise. I'm suspecting the 4AGE weighs slightly more but need to do more research on this.
