When I got my Protech shocks, Steve suggested I initially set them at half stiffness. He didn't ask what spring rates I had and even though my shocks were stiffer than stock, that was a good place to start. I'm not sure I made more than one click stiffer or softer after that.
Your "floaty" feeling probably came because your shocks were way too soft. It was pretty obvious where to set them. Chances are that when you are at the right stiffness, one click stiffer will be obviously too stiff (bumps will feel harsh) and one click softer will be obviously too soft (bouncy). At least that's what happened to me.
