Replacement Sun Visors?
« on: Monday,June 01, 2015, 03:41:21 PM »
My car came with just the chromed rods, the visors themselves are long gone. I don't expect to need them, but they would hide some crinkles in my amateurish headliner replacement  :D

I am thinking that I can re-purpose some cheap used visors off Ebay, by simply removing their fittings and shoving the chromed rod into the vacated holes.

But, it's probably more tricky than that ...  :-\

Does anyone have measurements of the width and height of the stock sun visors? Or, can anyone suggest suitable replacements?

As it happens, I have an old vinyl cover to one of my visors! I have a TCS but they should be similar to the S2s - maybe a bit fancier.

The dimensions are about 15 1/2" x 4 3/4". Depending on how much work you want to put into it, I might suggest a smoked plastic visor. I don't have mine any more either, but there have been times when I could have used mine. You might need to get creative about mounting something like that since the attachment to chrome rod would be visible. The original ones were made of a wire frame welded to a sheet metal sheath that held it on the chrome rod. The sheath was an 'interference fit' so it didn't droop but you could adjust it of course. The visor was foam filled and covered with vinyl. Over the years, the foam would disintegrate to a powder.

Maybe you could show us what you came up with!

Thanks! Those measurements are very useful.

Here's a pair I just missed on Ebay that I thought looked promising:. But, no measurements on them.

Those are a lot nicer than the original. You could contact the seller for the dimensions.

I bought some used BMW 318i visors that have similar measurements to the ones you sent. I'll update when they arrive and I've had a chance to try fitting them.

Has anyone tried these ones?

I have just cleaned up the vinyl, but everything inside the visor is brown powder.

How on earth does metal rust inside a sun visor attached to the roof? Condensation? Parked in a lake for years?

I have just asked Rimmer Bros for the dimensions and rod diameter.

I saw where a guy got some tinted plexiglass visors. This really interests me because I’m tall enough that using a regular visor would block my vision since I’m looking out of the top four or five inches of the windshield. My only issue with it was that he used padded hose clamps to attach them to the visor mount. It didn’t look bad but I thought it looked a little “klugy”. The truth is that I can’t think of a better way of doing it!

If you’re not trying to keep your car original, it might be interesting to check out “tinted windshield visors” or similar on Amazon or fleabay. They had a few different products that might be worth looking at.

I used the method as a guide to make the visers.  The old ones were as described powder.  My wife made new covers.

The vinyl part is not the problem. The rusted metal frame inside the visor, especially the bit which goes over the chrome locating bar, is the problem.

The metal sleeve over the 7mm chrome bar has to give friction to that bar, so it has to be the right diameter.

Rimmer Bros tell me that visor is 16" long, 5" deep and the bar is 1/4" diameter.

I think this part

will fit onto our chrome bars (which are available from SJSportscars)

A bit late to the party, but I wanted to pipe in on the visor conundrum.

I tried injecting the dust bag and failed miserably.  I found that the best solution is to cut the dust bag off (carefully) along the pivot rod entry side seam.  Restore the frame.  Sculpt a new foam visor using a relatively hard durometer foam sandwiching a .060" styrene or PVC core plate.  Slip the bag over the new foam, glue it up and paint it with Color Coat Super White vinyl spray paint.

I have a spare frame if you need it, drop me a message.  gshuck@gmx.com
