I've seen allot of discussion on the forum regarding style and placement of outside rear view mirrors so I thought I would toss my two bits into the ring.

I very much favor the Les Leston or Sebring mirrors mounted forward on the fender tops.  From a styling point of view that positioning allows the curvature of the WS to flow into the side glass for maximum visual advantage.  Theoretically by placing them further away from the base of a pillow the laminar flow has more time to reattach before going to the sides.

Attached are some documentary pix of what I went through to mount mine.  The positioning rearward was driven by the fact that for some inexplicable reason my FR RT wheel tub is about 3/4" further forward than the FR LF.  I suppose this is due to some slopy collision repair as I can't imagine the factory being so inaccurate in their lay up work.

I got a brick of 80 durometer polyurethane from McMaster Carr to fabricate the plinths on the band saw and disc sander.

At any rate, opinions are like...and we all have them. This is mine.

I recall discovering a similar difference with the rear wheel well. I can't remember which is which at the moment but one rear wheel was significantly closer to the forward face of the well than the other side. On checking a friends Type 54, his was the same!

From what I have been able to deduce, the sculptors, stylists and engineers did their jobs with tremendous fidelity and professionalism but when it came time to assemble these cars some people on the line let the team down horribly.  I suppose like all car companies it came down to quickness and profits so in the end perfection took a back seat.
