TCS Stromberg throttle cable mount help please
« on: Sunday,April 10, 2022, 02:02:26 PM »
My throttle pedal is not returning properly. The problem is at the Stromberg carb connection. That end of the outer-cable has a brass cap that seems to nest into a recess on a bracket. That is loose and I do not see how this was originally secured, except via a press fit.

Can someone help me understand how the end is supposed to be secured?

Here is the end I am talking about. When I use the the throttle, the end pulls out.

I see a tightening screw at the end where the cable attaches. If the screw doesn't keep the cable secured, I would use a ferrule around the cable as an aid. This also not a stock setup. For a bottom actuated cable throttle, the first picture shows a better method. The second picture is the stock setup.

Good to know that this is not stock, that helps. The problem is not with the end of the cable (inner), it is with the outer sleeve not being secured (circled).

If this is not stock, I guess I will have to make clip to hold the outer portion against the bracket.

your first photo shows the end of the outer cable inside a short tube at the bottom of the plate. Fabricate a setscrew to keep the outer sheath from pulling out. Also does your setup allow full rotation of the throttle spindle shafts?

Yes, set screw. That will do it.

I'll verify the rotation.  Thanks.

That cable is f-ü-ç-k-é-d. It is sticking internally and pushing out the housing instead of releasing the throttle properly.  Replace the cable and housing with bulk, teflon-lined, outer housing from a bike shop (2mm brake cable works a treat) and the inner from either a VW bus, or a tandem bicycle brake inner.

Yes, I put a set screw in and it is still very tight.

Like jbcollier implied, it looks like the strands are separating on the inner cable. This will increase its diameter and cause it to bind inside the outer cable. I also believe you need to replace the cable.

The cable from a bike shop was the ticket. Thanks.
