Can the solenoid affect the battery charging
« on: Saturday,April 16, 2022, 10:41:50 AM »
My battery is not getting charged on my tcs. I first replaced a  blown ignition light bulb, then I replaced a bad voltage regulator in the alternator, then soldered both output leads (bown/white, black),from the alternator as the wire connections had both seperated from the spade !! ,I have checked the ammeter and that works fine. I have bench tested the alternator and it put out a charge.
However if I connect the multimeter to the battery terminals it will show about 13 volts but with the engine running the meter shows lots of different numbers all very quickly changing so I cant read any exact number.
I am stumped and don't know what to do next.

This sort of thing is tough to diagnose over the phone.  What might be obvious if we were there can take a lot of time to sort when filtered through the internet.

Can you take a picture of your wire connections at the alternator so we can see what is hooked up where?  You make it sound as though the NW and the B wire are on the same connector.  I assume this is just a sentence composition issue?

The starter solenoid acts a junction for the charging current to get to the battery (via the ammeter).  A loose connection could cause an issue.

The small NP from the starter solenoid junction goes to the "batt" terminal on the internal regulator on the delco remy alternator, the small NY from the ignition warning light goes to the "ign ?" terminal  on the alernator regulator.  The thick NW from the ammeter goes to the positive terminal on the alternator, the thick B ground wire goes to the negative terminal on the alternator. I understand that the "starter solenoid acts a junction for the charging current to get to the battery (via the ammeter) but wasn't sure if the solenoid could be some kind of drain if it was malfunctioning . The connection at this point is good though.

I finally got it to work ! I think it was the heavy unsupported alternator wires that gave way, then took out the regulator and warning light. Even though I had rejoined those wires, once I pushef the connecter block in, one of them was not seating. Any how thanks for all advice given by members  as I now have a working car, just needing fine tuning.
