Throttle cable routing (TCS)
« on: Monday,February 21, 2022, 11:20:36 AM »
Was working on the car before leaving for a business trip...and noticed that the throttle cable (which had been replaced at some point) and sheath was routed through the same grommet as the clutch cable down at the base of frame.  Thinking this is not correct...and remembering that the S2 was routed along the top of the center hump, through the firewall, not at the base.

Can someone shed some light on the throttle cable routing in the TCS?  To me it seems like someone used a universal cable sheath...and just 'lost' the extra length by circuitous routing.  (that they also left off the return spring that goes from the cable fitting on the carbs to the airbox is something else I have to rectify along the way...).

TIA.

Mine comes through the same grommet as the clutch cable, then up through a home made bracket on the rear thermostat housing and over the top of the engine to between the carbs.

Not sure where mine comes out - I'm pretty sure its not through the chassis, I think it's a different grommet to the clutch. I believe it then runs in LH chassis Y leg and comes out under the manifold (The Dell'Orto's throttle cable enters vertically from below between cylinders 3 and 4 on the manifold)

Thanks all!  Not the cleanest (IIRC, the S2 ran through a plastic hose at the top of the 'triangle' where it meets the backboard...but it's been 15 years since I built my last one, so I'm pretty sure a few brain cells have gone west since then).  Going to replace it somewhere along the way (probably when I drop the lump for Ralph to go through it)...so...will clean it up then.

Well, it shouldn't, but people often don't understand and mount them that way. It should come down from the top and use the outer cable to push down on the throttles, with the inner being fixed. I'll bet your pulls down with the inner.

The throttle cable in the Elan and +2 comes over the engine and approaches the carbs from above.  In the Europa, it approaches the carbs from underneath.  I confirmed this by looking up period road tests and looking at the engine compartment photos.

Apologies, ignore my post above. Our Elan had Dell'Orto carbs and I mixed em up.
