stripped bolt hole

i was assembling my camshaft and there’s two bolts holding it m7x1 one of the bolt holes is damaged
and the other one seems ok what can i do to fix this i heard of helicoil but it’s very expensive tap à bigger hole or fill with jb weld and drill and tap

If there is enough "meat" where the damaged hole is, I would probably use a helicoil or similar product. There are some which use standard taps which might make it a little less expensive and our own JB has a favorite whose name I can't remember off hand. I'm not familiar with exactly what that hole is for but if it was not highly stressed, I would consider one of the thread repair products. Loctite, Permatex, and Devcon make products that should work and could actually be used in fairly stressed applications (read the specs first, of course). I would get them from an industrial supply house.

i was looking at it and i could go up one size redrill and tap just need to find new bolts

If it's in aluminum, you might want to use an insert of some kind to prevent (or at least lessen the chance) the same thing happening in the future.

Perma-coil is another brand. They sell it in a kit. You could go up a size but if you asked, what would a professional mechanic do to fix it and what would the factory do? I'm not saying going up a size is wrong though.

i would rather keep same size bolts just have to find the inserts for m7x1

A thread repair insert is the best way to go and you end up with a repair that is stronger than the original.  Amazon has cheap kits that would just fine.

Work CAREFULLY.  Keep the drill square, go slow and don't drill the hole any deeper.  Get a proper tap wrench so the tap goes in square as well.  Again, amazon will have inexpensive ones.

hi Jb im pretty new to this i cleaned the threads on my bolt with a die on the die it was m7 x1 when i get the helicoil do i take the one that as m7x1 everywhere i went they had m6 and m8 but no m7
even the kits don’t have m7 am i missing something

thanks Jb i was looking more at shipping date than the price shipping is quicker should get it by september 16  it’s my first time buying on amazon can’t wait to see how it goes

I don't know if that kit has instructions but the tang at the bottom is removed once you get the depth set. Go to deep and there is no backing it out. It's essy and not trying to scare you but just a heads up. If you have never done one, I would look on Youtube. Smaller sizes are a little easier. Large diameter usually come with an install too help the insert in.

no worries a friend of mine called me right after i ordered the helicoil he is rebuilding a crossflow he builds motorcycle engines he told me he had some m7x1 he's done this many times he’s  gonna install them for me at the same time it will be a learning experience so all is good
im still gonna watch youtube to see it done but i prefer letting my friend do this part and i did see that once you screw in the helicoil there’s a pin you have to break at the end and remove he gonna do it show me how and the i can do it on my own afterwards
