NG3-095 Gearbox
« on: Monday,November 11, 2019, 03:57:18 AM »
I'm installing a NG3-095 5-speed gearbox in my '73 Special, it came from a diesel Espace. Can anyone out there explain the gear change levers on this box, I'm struggling to understand how it operates. There is also what appears to be a Bowden cable connection in addition to the speedo cable and reversing light socket? Thanks.

The lever on the side,  near the bottom of the box is the fore and aft selector, the lever on the back of the case is side to side,  and I'm only assuming this,  but the Bowden cable is the reverse lockout actuator.

I have an NG1 in the car and an NG3 095 on the shelf. If my mind serves me correctly the actuation is the same as on the NG1 which means that the leaver on the side does all the gear actuation. Pulling it out and forward is first, back second. Third being in the neutral position and forward and fourth back. Fifth is pushing the leaver in and forward. For reverse there is the the big leaver on the back of the box. You need to tilt it and reverse is on the same spot as second.
You can run the gearbox without the reverse lockout leaver as the shifter in the Europa has no possibility to engage it anyway. It just requires more force to engage reverse but it’s still easily possible with one hand. This is the way I run the NG1 without any problems.

I have an NG3 from a diesel Espace in my Europa, see attached pics for the linkage, sorry it's not as clear as I would have hoped.

The rod that comes out at 90deg to the axis of the box, in a similar position to the standard 336, is the only one that actually selects gears, again in a similar fashion to the 336 box.  The rod that comes out the back of the box with a triangular lever attached to it serves to move the internal selector rod across the gates, ie R - 1/2  -3/4 and 5th gears.  It has a mechanism that works rather better than simply pushing/pulling the other selector on the side of the box (ie 336 style) making the action lighter for the driver.

The triangular piece of ally is attached to the triangular arm that comes out of the rear of the box and in my arrangement both selectors work to move across the gate, but only the side rod actually selects gear.s  that's probably as clear as mud, but the picture might help.

Tricky to set up, start at the gear shifter and work back through the system making sure all parts can move to the fullest extent without binding at the rod ends or touching the chassis.  Movement across the gate is critical to being able to select both reverse and 5th.  Finally make the bits at the rear t suit the travel you end up with.  Took awhile on mine..

Dave Lindemann from the yahoo group had a video on youtube that showed the shifting of gears, and the movement of the shafts on a NG3 with a cable shifter.  I can't find the video. maybe someone knows how to access.

Here's a pic of how I set my cable shift up.  The fore and aft selector was cut off and reversed to bring the lever in line with the side of the 'box, and the side to side shaft had a new lever added to it (the lever is ex-Coventry Climax fire pump as I had some pieces left over).  I fabricated the bell crank and brackets.
