If I recall, the reaction lever is a Ford part (Cortina?) and as far as I know, that downward kink is stock.
The kink is to permit some reasonable alignment of the forward cable end with the horseshoe in the tunnel. Note the forward cable end is a slot shape to fit the reaction lever and has very limited ability to 'wiggle' about and conform to a variation in pull angles.
Viewed in side elevation, the cable traces a diagonal path but the reaction lever only moves horizontally. Make sense?
Yes, noted your cable end rubbing on the fibreglass but frankly, I wouldn't worry much. It's annoying but even if it wears through the fibreglass, I can't see much potential for a problem.
