Some light entertainment.....
« on: Sunday,February 04, 2018, 02:38:52 AM »
Hi folks,

No Europa content whatsoever but a couple of things I've found over the last few weeks which have interested/amused me and I think might appeal to some of you folks....

Firstly, "Project Binky" a series of videos on Youtube by 2 guys who call themselves "Bad Obsession Motorsport".  The first few episodes are very amateurish in production but all the more appealing as you get the sense of humour from the guys.  Basically they're taking a Toyota GT4 and putting the 4wd drivetrain into a 1960s design mini. Yes, it's a challenge and there's not much of the Mini left but the way they approach the problems I found quite fascinating.  Made me think of our own Roddymac at several times.

Here's the first episode, stick with it for a couple of episodes and it becomes more professional & lighthearted.....

Secondly "How to Build a car" by Adrian Newey. a book on F1 car design.  Now I'm not an F1 fan, or any of the "wheels outside" cars if I'm honest and so I'm a bit late coming to this book.  But folks kept saying it was good and they were right, it is a fascinating insight into the 1980s onwards and how someone made their way in the sport.

You really need the "dead tree format" book although you can also pick up an E-book version for the Kindle. But there are several illustrations, his rough sketches of designs & parts for example, which aren't good on the Kindle and are easier to see on paper.  In the UK the book is now discounted at several places and at a tenner a pop (thebookpeople) it's a good deal.

Thank you, Brian.

"Project Binky" I already knew and it is a great Youtube channel to subscribe to. I love their sense of humour and the attention to details in the fabrication of even the smallest brackets or whatever. I wish I had skills like that.

The "How to build a car" book sounds like something I will definitely look into.

Let me also add George Karella's "Soup Classic Motoring" series on how to restore three cars when one is an absolute beginner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta7Yk8cW-TA
For one like me, who is low on practical skills and who is not always the quickest to begin a job, it definitely is a help to show that a lot can be accomplished, even with the smallest of steps, as long as progress is there. It even has Lotus (Esprit) content...

"soup classic motoring" ? never seen it before but just watched the episode you linked to and I'm a fan. I love things like that where folks have a "can do" approach, I shall be following the series.

"Project Binky" I've been meaning to post for a while, I'm a latecomer to the series but as you say, the skills they show in such a downplayed approach are pretty impressive. Some of the things they have done did make me wince a bit (banding those steel wheels on the lathe ?) but even so....

Thanks for posting the "soup classic" link.    Anyone else got something I should be watching while it's cold over here ?   :)

Both of those are great video series! I've watched the first Project Binkey and a few of the SOUP Classic videos. The third episode of the series has an interview with an early 11 racer who had Chunky do some work for him. Pretty interesting.

Peter, I wouldn't sell yourself short. I've seen some pretty clever ideas you've implemented!

Edit: I forgot to say that I really enjoyed the animation on the SOUP series!

Tremendous stuff. Puts fast and load to shame.  Love the process of how they went about it. Might have been easier to build a space frame and chuck on a glass fibre mini body tho. But those guys know what they are doing.
Which reminds me that Richard Winter (Banks) put a glass fibre ford escort body on an elan plus 2.
