New member question - Perished door glass issue

Hi all,

I am the new owner of a 73 TCS – which needs a little TLC – and new to the forum.

This is probably a simple question –

I need to change the door glass channel (u shape rubber) on both sides.

Do I need to remove the glass to replace this?

If yes – is this s simple job.

Congratulations on your acquisition!

I think you actually can replace the rubber with the glass in - although I did mine as part of a total rebuild so I'm not sure. I think you'll be able to pull it out with the window all the way down and put a new piece (that you've mitered the corners on) back in. You'll probably want to talk the window motor out first so the window will be as low as possible. You may want some lubricant on the rubber side so you can slide it between the glass and the channel and maybe some dry lube on the felt side so the glass will slide easier. Hopefully, it should go back in the opposite way it came out.

I would try that first and if that doesn't work, it gets a lot more fun! Good luck!

To take the glass out, you have to remove the metal frame, which is held in to the door by several hard to get to and drill out pop rivets (6ish), and even harder to replace.

The frame is also held in by quite a lot of black mastic, which is messy.

Try dropping the glass as low as you can get it without taking the frame out, and sliding the rubber down the sides as far as possibleand then trimming the tops when you have got as much down the sides as possible.

They are about 12" long from memory.
