WTB: Feeler for 807 engine
« on: Wednesday,May 18, 2016, 09:17:25 AM »
So I started down the path of purchasing items for a modern engine swap in my S2 Europa. I have days where I think it would be a shame to get rid of the originality. That being said I want more power than the wedge head has plus new liners and custom Pistons to get high enough compression for a performance motor seems pricey for the 697 engine. . So my next option is to swap a period engine like the 807.

I have been searching wreckers online and the usual eBay and craigslist.  My question is what do you think a fair price for and 807 would be. The current one on eBay for $4,000 is definitely not a reasonable price in my books as actual internal condition is unknown and there are too many ancillaries missing.

Am I being too cheap or should I be able to find a serviceable motor for less than $2,000 USD.
Maybe I just need to stick with the modern conversion and make sure everything remains reversible.
Cheers,
Ross

I can't advise you on which way to go as that is a personal decision.

$4K for a "pig-in-a-poke", "rebuilt" 807 is way too much.  Not that you can't easily spend that much if you are doing a performance engine but there is, as you say, too much missing and there's no info on what was actually done.  Someone on the yahoo list spoke with the seller and they were just as non-committal in person as in their ebay description.

I went the Renault hemi route as I like to stick (mostly) to period mods.  I bought a complete, running, early Renault 17 Gordini for $1000cdn.  The engine was a mid-production 807-13 (FI, 9CR, press fit-pins, large valves) with an early 395 transaxle (closer ratios than a 365).  Swapped in 10.25CR pistons and liners with billet rods (floating pins), had the cam reground to fast road spec and fit twin 40 Dells.  Machining, balancing and parts totals are probably nudging much closer to $4KUS than I would EVER admit to my wife.  Carbs alone are filled with gold as it's expensive buying brass for four bores each time you tweak the jetting.

Ross,
You might want to talk to William Kwan (in Burnaby), he might have one but it will need a rebuild.  When he bought my current car it came with a bunch of Renault engines which I think he still has.  If I see him at the ABFM on Saturday I'll ask and get some info for you.

Thanks Rod!  I was hoping to go to the abfm but I am now going out of town. My Dad might still be going.
