I'm about at the end of my tether with re-fitting the rear window. I've done several windshields on various cars by myself, and never had a problem, but this piece of glass is driving me nuts. It's the original glass with a new seal from Dent.
The first issue is that the seal is a strip, rather than the loop I'm used to dealing with - so stretching it around the glass before fitting the glass isn't an easy option.
I've tried several methods:
1) tacking the seal to the aperture, then offering up the glass, bedding the bottom edge in the seal, and lipping the seal over the perimeter - fails dismally as there is no way to lip the seal over at the top.
2) tacking the seal to the glass, threading a thin rope round the channel, and then offering that up, bottom edge first, to the aperture. The problem here is that the bottom edge of the glass curves up in the middle, so the rope tends to drop out (the depth of the channel in the seal is insufficient to crimp the rope in place). Even with some coaxing of the rope into the channel, the rope trick doesn't seem to work for this configuration - it seems impossible to press the assembly hard enough up against the aperture at the top, without the glass popping out at the bottom.
I did almost get it fitted, but then it popped out while I was making some final adjustments before inserting the locking strip (yes, I do have the special tool ready for that
). I am determined to do this job myself - I mean, how hard can it be, right?
Any advice or words of wisdom would be most welcome.
