Let the winter games begin!
« on: Monday,October 20, 2014, 03:17:10 PM »
Although there are a bunch of things I've got to do at the old town, I think that I am ready for winter, and once the floor is hooked up and I can get it heated, the Europa project will begin.  Here are some photos of the garage now that it is painted, and the 15' by 23' room the Lotus will have while it is being worked on.

Wow, your garage really looks great! And with a heated floor!! I'll be eternally jealous! I guess you are ready for winter. I guess for the next several months you won't have any more problems, with bears, right?

Very nice garage. I, too, am jeleous of your heated floor. I have no heat in mine which makes it too cold to do any meaningful work during the Nova Scotia winters.
The Twin Cam plays the symphony whilst my right foot conducts the orchestra. At 3800 rpm the Mad Pipe Organ joins in.

I guess I wasn't clear on the floor...  I am still waiting for the integrity-less contractors to get the heater and pump hooked up.  Went through the first bad storm last night, and it was nice not having to hear the tent garage get all @#&^% beat out of it all night!  I spent the day today working on my friend's Triumph Spitfire.  We were given a 1500 for free (actually expenses for a road trip to Salem, Oregon and back is all we have into it) to replace his 1300, which suffered from a broken top ring and piston/cylinder damage to #3.  So there were all the nice parts laid out to see -- the front suspension, the steering rack, front sway bar, rear side marker lights, all parts borrowed by Lotus for the Europa. And lovely Mini-Lite style Panasport wheels, like those on my MGB.  There is a nice wooden steering wheel in it, but I like the stock Europa one, provided I stitch the new leather cover onto it during the restoration process it will be nice and original.  I have seen indications that the headliner material is no longer available for the Europa, and Banks has a fabric that doesn't look like the original at all.  I will attempt to recoat the yellow stained intact headliner with upholstery paint, if possible.  I had been thinking of "modernizing" the interior with newer looking items -- the seats will need rebuilding and therefore an opportunity to upgrade the interior when they are covered.  So far I wanted to car to look as original as possible, but had wanted to switch the car's wiring system over to one with (in my case 21) more fuses, get away from the ammeter, maybe hiding the newer voltmeter guts in the old ammeter housing, and eliminating the old chrome plated ashtray and interior lights between the seats.  Going too far?

Going too far ?

Nope, updating and adding fused circuits to the wiring loom sounds a fine idea to me. Although these cars are simple compared with moderns, it will still make any problem solving much easier.

The idea of replacing the ammeter with a voltmeter is one I've considered as well. I'm still debating the value of an instant read-out of the charging state versus carrying all the current from one end of the car to the other and the potential for short circuits if the wire chafes.  The older I get the more risk-averse I become, so if I find a period ammeter that matches the other gauges then I might well give that one a try.

And on the garage ? Heated floors ? Weatherproof ? Warm & cosy ? dang it, you'll never get those 'ol bears to leave.....    :)
