Manual says to use engine oil …. What should be used ?

for that true vintage period experience, here ya go....

 ;)

Being more realistic, I seem to recall the advice was to use "the seasonal grade engine oil". These things originated from a time when you'd have winter and summer grade oils so presumably that would be either a straight 20W or 30w oil.  In 60's/70's UK the SU & Stromberg were very common and I think most folks (including me) just used engine oil which would be 20/50 around then.  I've since seen folks advocating a straight 20W oil but given that a 20/50 is 20W when cold and generally carbs stay cool (or at least not engine temps) then 20/50 sounds ok ?

Yes, Dexron 3 ATF is what I use.  Works well and is cheap.  You can buy "special fluid" from the usual British parts suppliers.  Comers in tiny containers and costs $$.
