Cheap and cheerful:

From a Toyota Corolla.  Remove the metal frame, make up spacers and mount the shifter assembly inside the tunnel fastened to the top using the spacers.  Use the rear chassis diaphragm to anchor your cables.

Hi

Forgive me, but is a cable operated mechanism significantly better than a well adjusted standard one? I'm guessing it must be!

All the best

I run a 5spd with a cable shifter and a reverse lock out.  Shifting is smooth, light, it's easy to find gears, and there are no miss-shifts.

I think it depends on the gearbox you have. The guys with NG3's and early 336's seem to benefit from a cable change and with that in mind, I also bought the assembly John shows above. Being Toyota it's well made and very neat.

Working out how to get the cables moving isn't difficult but I struggled with how to design a rear shift arrangement with the 352 box.  I couldn't find any arrangements on the internet at the time and the only things I came up with looked messy.  So I tightened up the OEM design, made it more difficult to accidentally get reverse and shelved the cable project, something I'll get back to when we've got a bad winter !
