Drain motor oil thru dip stick opening
« on: Wednesday,July 17, 2024, 07:53:43 AM »
HI:
Has anyone had any success with draining motor oil out of a Renault based engine dip stick opening?
I have an old 12v drain pump system that I had done this to another car way back when.
I can't get at the car to lift it/or reach under it because of where it is presently stored.

I don't have a Renault motor but that is the approved method of draining the oil in my Mercedes C230. I have used an electric pump to suck out the oil and a MityVac. I don't know why but my electric pump does not do nearly as good a job as the MityVac. It could be that the cheap electric pump I have is just not good. YMMV

Anyway, that's my $0.02 and it's probably not worth that!

I have an oil vacuum for changing oil in my old Smart car.  Use it for other things as well such as changing brake fluid.  Works great.

HI:
Thanks for the responses.
I guess my next(real) question is what OD should the suction line be to make it down to the sump?
The one on there now is 5/16 and its too large for the 807 dip tube in my basement so I figure it will to large for the S2 original.
My thoughts are a 1/4 might still be large.

If the Europa is inaccessible now why not wait until you're ready to drive it and do a conventional drain?

HI:
I don't know when that lift off will occur so while I have the time I thought I could do the easily forgot stuff.

"old" oil sitting in the sump without being driven isn't really a concern. There's a lot of fear mongering from the oil companies that gets repeated (change every 6 months ::) ), but decades old oil isn't harming anything unless it's getting very humid in the crankcase. Then the water is your problem.

Some interesting findings in this podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/105-no-time-to-change/id1492870857?i=1000637442335&theme=light
Very curious to see more scientific testing of old "shelved" oils.

I had a VW Beetle come in that had been parked with old oil.  Must have been parked 5 years or more.  The acids in the oil had stripped every bearing down to the copper.  It wasn’t wiped off or worn off, it was just gone.  Pure copper with not a trace of bearing material.  Thankfully they hadn’t tried to run as that would have f****d the crank.  YMMV

I honestly would wait until "lift off" does occur and then do a conventional, and lets be honest, a more thorough oil change in the conventional manner, without giving yourself all this grief.

HI:
Since the oil has not been changed for 3 years(storage) I want to do the "ounce of protection worth pound of cure" thing.
Take out as much of the old oil and replace it with fresh.
When "take off" happens do the proper drain oil after running a while to heat it up.
Right now I am a prisoner of my belongings (old cars, motorcycles, pinball machines).
All trappings of a misspent "yout"!

HI:
FYI
If you ever want/need to do the trip through the dip tube use this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/130985446247?var=430192228243
(6mm x 4mm)
The only trick is to cut the end you put through the dip tube on a 45 degree angle.
My first attempt had a flush cut and lacked the maneuverability that the angled cut allowed.
