Speedometer and Tachometer for my Europa with 4AGE Engine
« on: Tuesday,July 30, 2024, 10:30:28 PM »
Hello,
the gauges for my Eutopa are finished. My car has a 1600ccm 4AGE Toyota engine installed which will make around 160hp and revs up to 9000rpm. Therfore I was looking for a SMITH Tachometer that has a higher rpm and a Speedometer with higher Topspeed (even if I will not drive that fast). I found a 3inch SMITH Speedometer of an old Ducati for only €100.- at a market for vintage vehicles in France. In my garage I found an old SMITH 10.000rpm Tachometer. To make the design compatible to the Speedometer I made a pointer using an modified pointer of a old east German speedometer. A ring was made that looks like the one of the Speedometer. The elektronic of the Tachometer was modified to use the signal of my stand alone ECU. The Speedometercable is replaced by a electronic sender und a small BLDC motor whit a small electronic board that is mounted at the back of the Speedometer. The electonic is RP2040 Pico based.

Interesting, can you expand a bit more on how you made the electronics to replace the long speedo cable ? I did a quick search on RP2040 to find out what it is but definitely need more guidance.

Assume a complete idiot (that's me & electronics). That looks a great project if you can end up with a programmable speedo for different gearboxes/wheel/tyre sizes. And that's without relying on a very long bit of wire flickering the mechanical speedo !

Agreed, that looks great. Very tidy.
The Twin Cam plays the symphony whilst my right foot conducts the orchestra. At 3800 rpm the Mad Pipe Organ joins in.
