Rough but complete 68 S2 on FB, Utah. $7,500!
« on: Tuesday,December 12, 2023, 07:33:30 PM »
Looks strait but sunburned, has an ashtray.
White paint tends to be a red flag to me, seems to be a favorite for hiding poor bodywork.
I think the seller is very optimistic.

I’m not sure this one is any better than the +2 you posted.

Well, at least the body is not missing chunks!
Still seems pretty high to me.

Wow, that thing is baked.
The Twin Cam plays the symphony whilst my right foot conducts the orchestra. At 3800 rpm the Mad Pipe Organ joins in.

Going by my current rebuild they are ALL money pits unless they have just completed restoration!
Mine was a decent looking car on feeBay, but on getting it home needed more work than was stated.
It is now down to the bare frame, which also had to be repaired.
I do not keep an accurate tally of expense for sanities sake.

The white car is certainly restorable, but another frame-up job.
Needs the price halved.

Yes, they're all money pits.
Reckon one could rationalise a $5K basket case being better value than a $10K 'ran when parked' example.

Given that most of us are DIY types there's probably little difference in restoring the bodywork of either car and bodywork is by far the greatest time sink.

If it were not for the cost of shipping a New body would be the only sensible answer for many of these cars.
I have two bodies that were "Strait" to start with.
But once stripped all the old damage, flaws, and repairs are revealed.
Certainly fixable, but the hours and materials required really demand a new body if feasible.
The only way to reduce cost is to bring in several at a time and no one is going to tie up that sort of money waiting on buyers.
That only leaves a "Group buy" and those rarely work out.
I do think this white car is restorable, but should be assumed to be a frame-up effort.

Hello Lotus Folks
I'm  having fun conversations with the FB scammer  about the white car shown in the FB ad.
The funny thing is this car is sitting in my garage after I bought it for less than half the asking price.  In other words  this is a SCAM.
The GOOD is it's running and driving if only around the block.
The BAD is yes it's very crispy and needs all the plastic. I'm currently working on the very saggy drivers door and some gauges that don't currently work.
I'm finding many of the vendors including buying bits form the R16 shop
If anyone has other stashes of parts let me know.
Cheers Ric
PS :newhere: but not to Brit cars with 3 Minis in the garage.

FB "Seller" is almost close enough that I could tell them that I just need their address to come see the car and bring cash.
Of course scammers can be very creative in their excuses for not being able to show the car.
Surprised they overpriced it, a cheap price would be more likely to find a victim.

Good that your are reviving it, I'm in the midst of two at the moment.

And congrats on having real Mini's.
I used to have MG 1100's and Austin Americas back in the 70's.

I hope you are able to arrange for the scammer to get a nice set of bracelets for Christmas.

EDIT: Hmm, the original link still works but it no longer comes up in the Reno NV FB listings.

89701 makes you practically a neighbor.
Been working on mine for a while, might be able to help.
