2nd gear issues on 5sp box

I've been working through a lot of issues on my tcs with great success, but now my 2nd gear is not engaging properly. It was working fine but the was a lot of slack in the gear change. Since I sorted out the bushings to remove the slack in the linkage from the gear lever to the gearbox ,I'm having slight trouble in engaging only 2nd gear.  The clutch lever is adjusted with 3mm of slack.

Is the travel being limited on the gearstick itself by your recent adjustments?

The gear stick travels fine and now with less slack. Engaging 2nd gear is met with a slight gear crunch initially but then goes in and works fine. Logic tells me this is an adjustment issue but I can't figure out how.

Just to clarify, there is no problem “selecting” 2nd gear, but, it grinds on engagement.

Is that correct?

Yes that's correct, it's as if the clutch is not fully disengaging. But it was not problematic just before I sorted the sloppy linkage and all other gears are now that little bit easier to engage .

Is it worse when cold?  Gets better as the box warms up?

The Renault internal selector/synchro system is a bit baulky.  After the synchro does its job, if anything holds up the actual shift, it will grind.  It’s more common when cold as the colder, thicker oil holds things up.  Your main issue is a worn synchro BUT it has been exacerbated by your “tightening” up the shift linkage.  This slows the action of the shifter and causes enough of a “delay” to cause grinding.  The real fix is to pull the box and replace the synchro/gear.  In this case, you can go back and find any areas where you may have tightened your loose linkage too much and induced drag, and loosen them a tad.

A synthetic gearbox lube helps a good deal as well as it doesn’t get as thick when cold.  Redline MT80 (off the top of my head) is a good choice.  I’ll double check on that.

It’s Redline MT 85.  I normally run MT 90 but in this case the slightly lower viscosity may be helpful.
