Out put Shaft Seal
« on: Wednesday,August 23, 2023, 12:11:19 PM »
Bear with me cause I'm not familiar with the shortcuts so I will list website addresses rather that incorporate the posting into this format.
I have a 73 TCS with a five speed gear box.  The gear box number is 365-07, serial number 1597.   While sitting or idling in my garage with oil in it, I had no leaks from the transaxle, but I recently put some miles on it and the leak appeared from the out put shaft seal on the passenger or right hand side.  I'm assuming these are original parts from the factory since there are only 22,000 miles on the car and it sat for almost 50 years.
Dakazman posted to another listing for seals that he got parts from the Renault 16shop and reproduced the website page.  I went to the site and it has changed some.
 https://www.renault16shop.com/Webwinkel-Category-4854033/%3Clng%3E%3Cnl%3E%3C![CDATA[pakkingen-en-keerringen]]%3E%3C-nl%3E%3Cen%3E%3C![CDATA[gaskets-and-seals]]%3E%3C-en%3E%3Cfr%3E%3C![CDATA[joints]]%3E%3C-fr%3E%3C-lng%3E.html

It shows two seals for a " 5 gear" box and it appears the only difference is one is rubber and the other is something else, although they don't explain what that is.  If you go to the detail pages for either one of these bearings, they list multiple part numbers and reference to a Renault 16.  I'm not familiar with either one of these number references and don't know where to look to find out.  I have a seal that I got from Ray at R.D. but would like a second with the nut in case I damage the original nut, but don't know which one of these are correct.  Any help here would be appreciated.

Separately, when I disassemble the old nut and seal, I planned to mark the position of the nut and then carefully count the number of turns required to remove it.  When installing the new seal, this count number would allow me to closely approximate the tension applied.  I'm assuming the old parts are from the factory and are correctly tensioned.  If not I'm in trouble.

Both seal nuts have rubber sealing lips.  One has a felt dust shield the other another rubber lip to do the same job.

When changing the seals with the transaxle assembled, it is better to use the original nut as that way there is no doubt you got it back to exactly the same position.

Thanks JB.
How difficult is it to get the old seal out and the new seal in.  I don't have a press but could use my vise or the drill press.

It's easy.  A socket and hammer will get it in.  Just make sure it is square to the bore of the nut.  You do need to pay attention to the depth the seal is pressed into the retainer nut.  Measure the existing seal depth before you knock it out.

Btw, I have a 5 speed and have changed the seal 3 times over the past 37 years  It still drips like once a week.  I also have replaced the rear shifter bushing and seal 3 times and it still drips.  Both are annoying but not enough to motivate me to spend a considerate amount of time chasing.  I check to tranny oil level every 4 months or so and the loss is undetectable, but the pavers under the car know.  I have a pan of shame under the car  now😒

Change the o-ring behind the seal run at the same time.

Minor dripping is annoying but not an issue as long as you regularly check the level.  The oil level is CRITICAL for 5 speeds!!

Thanks Pfreen, I can empathize with your pan of shame as I have the same two leaks.  The rear shift lever shaft got replaced but I did not do a neat job and didn't want to wait for another seal to arrive so I tolerate it for now.  When I do the output shaft seal I will give that one another try.
I'm optimistic about the differential seal.  The left side for me is bone dry and I assume it's the one from the factory, so I'd like to duplicate that result.  We will find out soon enough.  For now, I monitor the oil level and enjoy being able to drive it after working on it for four years.

JB, I remember you stating in another post that the level is critical for the five speed but thanks for reminding me.

Lots of good information but I'm still looking to have someone confirm the part numbers on the Renault 16shop website.  Perhaps either of the two will fit but I don't want to go through the hassle of ordering and then returning overseas.  So, if someone can help me out there, I'll be off and running.

Thanks again, I couldn't do any of this without your long term memory banks!

As far as the rear shifter seal, it doesn't leak for a while, but after a while it starts dripping again.

The original output seal had a felt dust seal.  The replacements have a double rubber lip seal.  I don't know if that is an issue.  Also, My passenger side seal is the one that is leaking like you.

Also JB, I did install new orings on the output shaft spacers.
