just venting..
« on: Monday,December 30, 2013, 01:58:41 PM »
These wouldn't be British cars without gremlins, would they?

Having failed in finding a speedo gear for my 365 transmission, I set about this weekend removing the OEM speedo to install a Speedhut GPS unit.

Unhooked the ground wiring from the speedo, removed it. Just testing things before I put the new unit in.

All instrument lights are out, but all instruments work: temp comes up, oil pressure reading, etc.. ONE light works: the one that was in the speedo (it's dangling by its wires). They all seem to be using the same ground, and wired in line on the same power circuit, but only the lights are not working. But they are working for the one.

Wiring diagram doesn't indicate that light is on a different circuit than the other instruments, nor is it/they on different fuses.

go figure.

Not really asking for a solution, one way or another I'll figure it out...but you're welcome to take a guess.

Just a guess: do the lights work if you plug that dangling working light back into the body of the speedo?

Good question! I'll try that tomorrow.

Are you getting 12v to the first lamp or do you have a Panel lamp switch ?  I can't remember how the wiring goes behind the dash but my first bet would be a voltmeter across the first lamp and then check any bullet connections.

Or my favourite option when my car gets these sorts of ideas.....   the electricity has curdled. No, don't laugh, it's been well proven that Lucas electricity does curdle, that's why when you tap a non-working lamp or motor, wiggle a wire or just swear very loudly and it suddenly springs into life; y'see the electricity curdles in the thin wires and you've just shaken it free......   It must be true, there's no other answer  ;)

Interesting theory on the curldling, I'll check the knowledge base!

The panel switch is a pot that brightens/dims the dash lights...full on you pull it and the headlights come on.
