Set of Cosmics installed. I hear a rubbing noise
« on: Monday,June 20, 2022, 02:24:21 PM »
So, after a winter of cleaning up a set of Cosmic wheels I bought a set of Toyo Proxes tires.  The rear wheels are 13x6" with 205 60s and the fronts are 13x5 1/2" with 185 60s.  On my first drive I hear a rubbing sound, but I am not sure if it is from the front or rear.  I believe I will have to remove the wheels and see if there are any tell tales inside the rims.  I hear the sound going straight ahead and feeling around the wheels they are not touching the body anywhere.

Any thoughts on what I should look for as I remove the wheels?

They can rub on the inside, toward the centerline. I think mine do that on extreme turns.

The inside of the rear wheels run fairly close to the trailing arm so if the wheel offset isn't correct, that may be something to check.
Another possibility might be a front flexible brake hose now touching wider tyres?

5.5” rims are very close to the rear upright.  You have 6” so worth checking there.

Last evening, I jacked up the front wheels individually and spun them.  I didn't hear or feel anything.  I realize the suspension is hanging so that doesn't rule out the fronts.  Today, I will jack up the rears together and see if I can spin them, if not, I will remove them and see if I can see where there may be some contact.  If I see nothing, I will go back and remove the fronts individually and look for evidence of rubbing.

The sound by the way is not a constant scraping, it is on and off.  So, whatever is rubbing, you only hear it at one part of the wheel's revolution.

Today I jacked up the rear and that is where the noise is coming from.  So, I first removed the driver's side wheel and turned the drum and the noise persisted which led me to check the brakes.  I adjusted the rear brakes on both sides took a quick spin and the noise is pretty much gone.  The car is pretty loud, so it is hard to hear noises outside the car when it is running and rolling.  But I think I got it.  There is no evidence of anything rubbing anywhere.  So the Cosmics stay on.

Do the rear brakes self-adjust when the parking brake is used?

They should do on the Specials if they are assembled correctly, though I understand they never work very well. I'm not sure if early TC had the same rear drums as S1/S2's. You will have a square adjuster on the bottom of the backplate if they are NOT self adjusting.

I've just rebuilt mine but not got it back on the ground yet. I couldn't find a definitive answer as to which self-adjuster went on which side, as I believe mine were wrong. I guess I'll find out if they lock the rear drums!
