Undercoating
« on: Saturday,January 29, 2022, 06:34:52 PM »
Anyone have a recommendation on an undercoating product? Want to do the wheel wells and bottom. Not sure on the engine compartment, maybe just paint there? Thanks

There’s a group of guys in our local MG club who do Waxoyl. I have no experience with it but my MG friends say it is very good.

A while ago I asked about this. 3M Rubberized Undercoating, 08883, was suggested. I haven’t used it yet. But that is what I am going to use when the time comes.

The reason to apply undercoating in the wheel wells is to prevent damage to the fibreglass from rocks kicked up by the tires.  You want something that goes on moderately thick and stays compliant.  If it hardens, then it won't soften the blows.  Thus the recommendation for 3M Rubberized Undercoating.  It works well.

In the engine compartment, undercoating is unnecessary and would just add unneeded weight.  I happily used semi-gloss black paint.

When i restored my car the engine bay was fully stripped out,  I painted it out with Blackboard Paint, it covers well and i think it looks well with a matt finish,  Stuart...
