How do I remove bonded screen
« on: Wednesday,December 08, 2021, 03:27:00 AM »
I have just collected a new screen direct from Pilkington and cant work out the best way to remove my old screen, specifically without damaging the original trim which I would like to re use. I could not find the proceedure in the old  threads so would appreciate any help. The current sealant/adhesive is very sticky and tough, not solid but slightly malleable, so the only way I can envisage it working is if I gouge out the sealant between the glass and the body from inside of the car.

There are a few ways to remove the bonded glass. A sharp but flexible fillet knife is what I used. Another clean and effective method would be a wire cutting system. Leave the trim attached and soften the bond with a heat gun. Make a small hole starting point and insert the wire. Carefully work your way around the glass, take your time...

Windscreen fitters use a flexible blade, not sharp enough to cut the user, but thin and bendable enough to make the cut through the mastic.

Once the top section is cut, the windscreen usually comes away easily. So far I have removed 5 without any dramas.

The plastic surround is just a push fit over the edge of the windscreen, and should come away easily before you cut the mastic joint.

My trim is firmly stuck so I cant get the wire method through. So it seems I will have to proceed as I first imagined and work at the top and sides then try and push it out. Added to all this I will have to remove this new screen yet again when I come to repaint the car some time in the future.

If you are repainting in the same colour, removing the screen is not necessary. They can use masking tape on the trim. I have had 1 done this way, black only.

I recently used that Harbor Freight kit to remove my windscreen. If you can get the wire through without using that long T-blade tool, do it. If you have to use the tool, 1) file round the tip so it doesn't gouge the paint, 2) push the tool through along a 3-4 inch section, so 3) you don't crack the windshield like I did. If you use that tool to push the wire through, you end up with the thickness of the tool tip plus two wire diameters. That was enough to crack the windshield at the insertion point. After that, it all went remarkably smoothly.

I used a local window installer to cut out my el Camino windshield. They wrapped a wire around the window with a set of crank handles that tightened the wire as it cut thru the sealant in less than 5 minutes.

I got it from Pilkington automotive ltd in Heathrow. I understand it comes from the Netherlands to their main branch in Redditch UK, then onto Heathrow.

I should have added that Pilkington gave me the details of a trade fitter who placed the order, and once I paid them I simply  collected from Pilkington.
